Subtropical SC Mosquitoes Unfazed by Badger Anti-Bug BalmAug 03, 2010
By goonius I had high hopes for Badger's insect repellent. I love their other products, and didn't hesitate to give this one a try, particularly after reading that it scores a zero hazard with EWG's Skin Deep Database.
At the beginning of the season it seemed like it might be having some effect, which would wear off after 20 minutes. But by the time the mosquitoes were out in droves, its ineffectiveness against these relentless pests became apparent. We are positively swarming with mosquitoes here in the balmy southern edge of South Carolina.
I wasn't hoping for a miracle product, and didn't expect one, but the mosquitoes seem, quite simply, unfazed by this lovely-smelling, easy-to-apply insect repellent. In the five minutes it takes to pick blueberries in our backyard, we get about a dozen bites - with or without Badger's protection.
I can't compare this product to those containing DEET. Being one of those loathsome hippie types, I have never and will never use DEET on my children or myself. For proponents of the use of DEET, it's worth noting that DEET is a skin and lung irritant, is toxic to aquatic life, is suspected to have reproductive toxicity, is toxic to the brain and nervous system, is possibly mutagenic, effects the kidney and renal system, and is a possible endocrine system disruptor. Yuck. I'd rather throw my money away on another potentially useless non-toxic product or choose our outdoor hours more carefully.
I think it's great that this stuff works for some people in some locations, but I would advise potential buyers that for some people in other locations, it's about as effective as saying "Go away mosquitoes!"
For my family, the search will continue for a safe and effective mosquito repellent.

Keeps the bugs away!Jul 02, 2008
By Adam Johnson I have been confidently using this product on myself and my small children for years now. It smells like citronella, rosemary, sandalwood/patchouli... it smells great. I always get comments about how good I smell when I'm using this product. And it works, even camping in deep woods the mosquitos stay away from us. I've been using the balm out of the tin, but am looking forward to the push-up stick - it's like you keep bugs away and moisturize at the same time. No complaints about this product at all. It's good to not be spraying chemicals all over yourself and your children.

Do not buy this productJul 02, 2010
By Lewis All the other reviews I have found on this stuff have been positive, and I just can't figure out how that is possible. This stuff is horrible. It does absolutely nothing to stop or repel mosquitos. On the contrary, it seems to even attract them. I've worked for 8 summers as a biological field tech, basically spending 2-3 months at a time camping out every night and working in the field everyday. For years, I have relied on good old fashioned high concentration DEET, which always got the job done. This year, I thought I should try to go a bit healthier with this stuff, and it was a huge mistake. I'm writing this in the field right now, and I have a shiny layer of this stuff all over me. And I'm watching mosquitos by the DOZEN land on glistening, balmed skin and not hesitating to bite. Literally hundreds flock to me when I step outside (which does not happen when I'm not wearing this crap), and they aren't remotely bothered by it.
Maybe it is good enough for hippies or a trip to the park or something. But do not mistake this stuff for a serious bug stopping solution if you are in any kind of real bug country. It DOES NOT WORK. Well, I take that back - it is a wonderful skin moisturizer, but a bit expensive for that alone. And it does smell nice, I will giive it that.

This works! Worked for me in the PhilippinesAug 22, 2011
By Elsie Every time I go to the Philippines, I get eaten alive by mosquitoes, and Off or Avon Skin-So-Soft lotion has never worked for me. Once, I left with over 100 bites - and they all got swollen and infected. I brought my 2-year old toddler with me this time, so I wanted to be *especially* sure that we wouldn't get bitten, and I wanted something that would be safe for the baby. After reading the reviews for Badger Balm, I decided to give it a try, and I am SOOOO glad I did. If it didn't work, I would consider it expensive, but since it worked, it was worth its weight in gold to me.
My baby didn't get a single bite, and I only got 5 - on the places I didn't apply the balm. (Note: apply it to your butt and thighs for the times when you're sitting on the toilet!!!) The real test was when we went to an indoor zoo, with bugs swarming everywhere. My daughter and I had slathered ourselves in the balm, and the other two people we were with didn't use it. The mosquitoes always come for me first, but the baby and I didn't get a single bite. The two people who did not use it got 3 bites and 7 bites.
I highly recommend this product if you're traveling to the tropics. Be sure to apply it to all the exposed areas of your body (neck, face, arms, ankles, etc), and probably even the parts covered by clothing if you want to be really safe. It takes a while to get used to the citronella smell, but it's not so bad after a while. And it's smart to reapply frequently (every few hours), when the smell starts to fade. One stick was more than enough for my family of 3 people during a 3 week trip, with applications 4-5 times per day. And we still have a good amount left over. I'm SO happy that I finally found something that repels mosquitoes without DEET! It felt really good to know that I wasn't covering the baby in chemicals and was still getting good protection. FINALLY!!!
