5Magnesium for HypertensionSep 12, 2007
By Patricia M. Dunn
I recently read a book about Magnesium-taurate to reduce blood pressure...It was a little high priced for my budget, so I did a little research and found that magnesium is "chelated" (combined in a special process) to various amino acids. The chelation process makes it more absorbable, specially for old folks like me...So I ordered Chelated Magnesium from Country Life (for a lot less $), and am happy to report That after one month of taking this product three times a day, my blood pressure has dropped from 198/140 to 140/78, and is still dropping slowly. It took a couple weeks for it to start working, then I had a significant drop for about a week, and now am off the drug the doc had given me. I DO NOT recommend that anyone stop taking blood pressure meds, without your doc's knowledge. A good doctor will work with patients who want to try this alternative to drugs....Magnesium deficiency is common in this age of processed foods, and can be the cause of Hypertension...I take Calcium, potassium , and zinc with the magnesium for balance....Also, Country Life has fast courteous service! 5Easy to swallow, digestApr 16, 2011
By RutnReel
I have tried several different magnesium tablets over several years. These are easy to swallow and don't give me digestion problems. My blood tests show a "normal range" for magnesium when taking two of these a day(one in the morning, one at bedtime with food). In short, they work for me.

5chelated magnesiumFeb 02, 2011
By EastTNAmazonAddict
I have bought vitamins over the years and magnesium usually makes me nauseated. This one does not hurt me at all and it helps me prevent muscle cramps that I used to get all the time.

3Misleading LabelDec 24, 2011
By Tiger in the Boat "Tiger"
The Country Life product label clearly says "Chelated Magnesium, 250 mg". But when you read the ingredients, it says:

Magnesium (as magnesium amino acid chelate, magnesium oxide) 250 mg

In other words, part of the 250 mg of magnesium is magnesium oxide, which is not chelated, and is the least digestible form of magnesium. Magnesium Oxide is a naturally occurring mineral, which for most people is only of small value as a magnesium supplement, because it mostly goes right through you and hits the bowel.

Magnesium oxide is an inexpensive form of magnesium, the kind you find in a low cost drugstore bottle. So be aware, if you are price shopping and comparing potency on this brand, that:

(1) We don't actually know how much chelated magnesium is in this product.
(2) Part of the magnesium in this product isn't chelated, and is in the form of poorly digestible non-organic mineral (in other words, it is ground from a rock!)
(3) Magnesium oxide loosens the bowels on some people (because it largely isn't digested, it goes through the digestive track and "relaxes" the bowel).

On the digestion issue, here is some substantiation of my statements above from Wikipedia:

"Magnesium absorption from the insoluble oxide ... is erratic and of poorer efficiency, since it depends on the neutralization and solution of the salt by the acid of the stomach, which may not be (and usually is not) complete."

"Supplements based on amino acid chelates ... are much better tolerated by the digestive system and do not have the side effects of the older compounds used"

I am using a mixture of different types of magnesium, primarily chelated, in order to improve health and reduce blood pressure. Magnesium is vital for health and largely missing in the average diet, and even magnesium oxide, although poorly digested, does provide some benefit.

5Magnesium helps relieve a lot of ailmentsSep 04, 2011
By D. R. Schryer
Magnesium is extremely important for good health. Yet, surprisingly, about 80% of Americans are deficient in this essential mineral. And magnesium deficiency is a significant factor -- often the primary factor -- in many severe illnesses which have become quite common in recent years including heart attacks and other forms of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, fatigue, migraines and other headaches, osteoporosis, insomnia, and most cases of muscular problemsas well as restless leg syndrome. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked, millions of Americans suffer needlessly from the foregoing ailments or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs (which often have unpleasant or dangerous side effects) when they could be significantly mitigated or even cured with magnesium supplementation. The form of magnesium which is best assimilated is chelated magnesium such as this. I'm a retired research chemist, not a physician, but I know how important magnesium is and I have personally experienced many benefits from taking chelated magnesium daily.

By the way, anyone interested in learning more about the role of magnesium in human health should acquire and read The Magnesium Miracle by Dr. Carolyn Dean -- available from Amazon.com.
