High Quality Endorphin BoosterDec 15, 2010
By Kerri Elders Source Naturals DLPA is a high quality amino acid compound; each tablet delivers 750 mg of dlpa, which can help increase endorphin levels in the brain. DLPA can be used to help raise dopamine levels, which in turn can make you feel more alert, improve memory, increase stamina, (possibly) reduce food cravings, and reduce pain.
I use it as needed in the mornings (2 capsules, i.e. 1500 mg) if I have post-workout pain from the day before or hand pain from golfing. I've used other brands and Source Naturals compares favorably with them all; I believe it to be a high quality supplement & this is the one I buy myself (good deal on Amazon's Subscribe & Save program).
VERY IMPORTANT: always take amino acids like DLPA on an EMPTY STOMACH, preferably with water. Wait at least 45 minutes before eating (coffee is OK). This allows the amino acid to be absorbed into the bloodstream and then the brain, unbound to any other proteins (amino acids are all constituents of protein). If you're taking this with food, you're wasting your money!
I'm not a doctor, but I think I read somewhere that people on antidepressants should not take amino acids without talking to their doctor first. Always a good practice to thoroughly research any supplement before adding it to your regimen. I have tried DLPA before, a different brand from a retail source, so I know it helped take the edge off my arthritis. Source Naturals arrived promptly, in very good condition, performed just as the the retail tablets had done, and at a much better price. Thank you, Source Naturals and DLPA!

By Matthew Lyon I take this every night with B-6, B Complex (both Jarrow), N-Acetyl Tyrosine to make my own 5 hour energy. Works great. I noticed a big difference when switching to this brand. There is also a big difference between this and the regular phenylalanie, a big enough difference that I will never buy regular phenylalanine again.

By D. Watson As some other reviewers have mentioned, this DLPA is good for taking the "edge" off pain. I don't think you could use it by itself to treat significant pain, but I find that it kind of "greases up" my joints. My back always feels a little achy, nothing serious, I'm just aware of some discomfort. When I take this DLPA, my back feels young again!
Also (the main reason I got it), it's very good for appetite suppression. More specifically, I find that it gives me greater willpower. When I've had my DLPA (I only take one each morning), it's a LOT easier to pass up on tasty things that aren't good for me.
I'm not sure about the alertness and energy benefits; I haven't really been paying attention. But I do think I've been more productive lately, and I've been making do with insufficient sleep, so maybe there IS some benefit there.
Overall, it's a great product at a good price. I'll definitely continue using it.

By terri I have fibromyalgia and chronic back pain, i started taking DLPA to help take the edge off of the pain, it hasn't made it go away, the best I can say for me is that it takes the edge off. It took about a week to take effect but I am taking a lot less pain medications. I would recommend it for someone who is on chronic pain to help, just don't expect a miracle pill. I didn't wake up completely pain free, but when its lower then what it used to be I consider that successful. Just remember to make sure you research the medication to make sure it doesn't interfere with any other medications you're taking. I currently take 1 pill a day.
