best help for dry eyes!!!!May 01, 2011
By Finally "home" Working in Ophthalmology (eye doctor's office), I had heard that Flax Seed oil was helpful for dry eyes. I thought it sounded like "snake oil" - until I tried it two winters ago. Within a month of using it, the burning and dryness I had suffered with for years was dramatically decreased. I had tried Restasis which burned and was a budget breaker, this is much more affordable and healthier. You do not put it in your eyes, it is a nutritional supplement. The recommeded dose is 2000 to 3000 mg per day (2-3 gel caps, I take 3). It has anti-inflammatory and immune-support properties, highest in LNA, Omega 3.
I suffer from dry eyes due to contact lens overwear and chronic conjuctivitis as a teenager (back when contact lenses were first marketed as extended-were/overnight use)
This brand is a little more expensive, but I like the added benefits of Borage and the lignans.
If you don't buy this brand, make sure you buy a brand that is cold pressed so the oil offers the most nutritional amount possible.
One down side for some individuals is the fact that it can soften stools, this may not be preferred by all. The glecaps are also quite large.
This particular product has added benefits. It has lignans and Borage as well, both execptional nutritional supplements on their own. I could spend quite a bit of time on why, but will save that for another day.
There jury is still out in the debate at to whether lignans are good or bad for estrogen-driven breast cancer sufferers as it is a phytoestrogen. My gut feeling is that it is good, but who knows.
