Great natural low calorie sugar substituteSep 21, 2006
By Baron Williams Lo Han Sweet is a great low calorie sugar substitute primarily sweetened with all natural mogrosides extracted from the Lo Han fruit.
Mogrosides are about 250 times sweeter than sugar and have no calories. Unlike clean tasting sweeteners like sugar, fructose, SoooLite or xylitol, mogrosides have their own very distinctive flavor and aroma. Like sugar, mogrosides have a full body sweetness, but are more similar in flavor to sweeteners like brown sugar, maltose, and honey. Mogrosides taste and smell a little like brown sugar, with a hint of honey, coconut, and wheat, and have an amber color similar to honey. Because of the distinct flavor, its usefulness is somewhat limited to items that go well with its unique flavor.
There is no aftertaste at all; however the mogroside sweetness and flavor lingers in the mouth for several minutes. This sweetener's flavor blends very well with chocolates, cereals, coffee, breads, tea, etc. It does not go so well with something like vanilla ice cream or peppermint tea where the mogroside flavor is overwhelming. In such items a clean tasting no calorie sweetener like SoooLite will probably be a better choice. Usually, if a food tastes good with brown sugar or honey, it will taste good with mogrosides.
Lo Han Sweet also contains xylitol, which is a natural low calorie sweetener that prevents tooth decay. Xylitol is responsible for Lo Han Sweet's few calories. It has about 40% of the calories of sugar, tastes almost exactly like sugar, and is about as sweet as sugar. It complements the flavor of the mogrosides.
Lo Han Sweet is a great all natural low calorie sweetener that every cook could easily use to replace sweeteners like brown sugar, malt or honey in most recipes.

Expensive natural sweetener with xylitolDec 14, 2008

If you are hoping for pure lo han guo, an herbal sweetener 200 times sweeter than table sugar, you won't get it here. This product contains xylitol, and there are two problems with that: (1) xylitol costs much less than lo han guo, so you would think the price would be much lower than it is for this product since it is not pure lo han guo; (2) xylitol, like all sugar alcohols, can cause intestinal gas and even diarrhea when ingested in even small amounts. Many people who chew sugarfree gum, for example, develop terrible intestinal problems because of the sugar alcohol in the gum. If you want lo han guo not mixed with other sweeteners, check out TriMedica's SlimSweet, which Amazon also sells. SlimSweet has some silicon dioxide in it, but it is a harmless additive that prevents caking, and it might actually be good for your bones. It is a powdered form of the mineral silica which many people take as a bone supplement. Also, SlimSweet has no sugar alcohol, and it costs less than half, ounce per ounce, than Lo Han Sweet. Only a tiny bit needs to be used compared to regular sugar. I use it in coffee, tea, and to sweeten oatmeal. It is expensive, (that's why I gave it only 4 stars) but maybe worth it for the health benefits compared to sugar and "chemically altered" sweeteners.

I was disappointed in this product. I wanted the Lo Han Guo without any other ingredients. This product has Xylitol which has an unpleasant after taste.

By KKELLY I like this sweetener compared to the Stevia packets I was using. I'm not normally a user of such things but have been on a diet where sugar of any kind is not allowed and have resorted to using the non-sugar types. If you're not used to them they can be very off-putting. This sweetener does not have the after taste Stevia does. The only draw back to it is the cost. I cannot afford to use this in baking or any actual recipe. I would give it 5 stars as a sweetener goes, but because it is cost prohibitive to use as a complete replacement for sugar (baking, etc), I gave it four instead.
