5Really helpful!Nov 11, 2010
By Elenor
After a 2-hr plane flight, I thought I'd torn a muscle or bruised it internally, because I had pain, but no bruising, in the back of my calf. The pain didn't go away for several days, and I suddenly realized: OMG!! Deep vein thrombosis!! Couldn't reach my doctor, so I researched DVT online. I massively increased my water intake (in the hopes of thinning my blood and at the risk of raising my blood pressure), added vitamin K to my diet and went in to see my doc when I could. (Apparently clots in the calf rarely break free and cause strokes or heart attacks -- and we have no insurance, so I try to avoid going to the doctor. (How's that for modern America!)

My doc recommended nattokinase (because I had a flight to Europe coming up in a couple months) and apparently, nattokinase doesn't just help prevent clots, it dissolves them if they form. So, I quit the vitamin K a week or so before starting the nattokinase (it's dangerous to thin the blood too much; which was a concern) but I needed to prevent another clot! All calf pain went away -- was it the nattokinase or just the passage of time? I don't know, but I think it as the nattokinase. I made the flight to Europe with no problems. I have dropped my dosing back down from two a day (morning and evening) to one a day. But I will raise it back to two capsules a day before my flight to California. DVT is nothing to fool with! (But neither are pharmaceutical blood thinners!)

The HeartScan-blog doctor had a complete hissy fit about nattokinase, but all the other reviews I've read say: used judiciously, it's okay. {shrug} with no insurance and, sadly, little trust for doctors (thanks Big Pharma!), I'll keep doing what I think is best.

4Does it help?Sep 15, 2008
By John Weissman
Four stars for decent price and lack of questionable ingredients (such as phthalate compound). You might think nattokinase is the next big thing, if you listen to its promoters. Open a cap and smear the powder on chicken; it will turn the meat to mush (tho not as fast as bromelain will). So ... it is indeed a protease (digests protein). Now, the question is, does it digest so-called "fibrin". This is bad protein, plaque (I spel it: plak), which perhaps can be found in your arteries (God forbid, unless you are a terrorist). How does the nattakinase "know" what's fibrin and what's plak, or, uh, come to think of it, what's an artery? They're all protein. Dunno the answer, but maybe your artery "knows" and wont allow itself to be digested, as it were. Do not take nattokinase with other blood-thinners, is the warning. I got thin skin, yeah, but dont know if I got thin blood, even after a few months of taking this product ... With my main bank about to fail, I cannot afford to get my blood tested to prove it one way or the other.
