5Great Post-Workout ShakeApr 23, 2012
By Harry Barber
It tastes good (as good as can be for a whey protein powder), mixes somewhat easily (a blender or shaker is recommended but if your in a bind, you can get away with just using a spoon to mix), and has a high enough protein count in each serving to meet the needs of anyone looking to supplement some quality protein into their diet.

I've tried just about ever powder on the market, optimum is probably my favorite now-a-days. I mainly use it as a recovery drink after my workout, adding in a banana for extra sugar (when I use a blender). I've also been adding this powder mix to help with muscle recovery, Post Workout Stack (Bulk Powder) 90 Day Supply. I know the protein powder has something to do with it as well, but I think the beta alanine and cissus in that post-workout stack has made a huge difference in my performance in the gym the next day, and it keeps on compounding from workout to workout, which has been great. I always try to drink my shake within 30 minutes of when I finish my workout.

They say you should take some type of post workout recovery shake within the first hour after your workout. If you don't feed your body within that hour, it starts to break down muscle at a more rapid rate and feed off of that. At the very least, I'll always carry something with me, but ideally, I like drink the shake in the first 30 minutes to prevent any type of muscle breakdown.

4Nice light tasting protein, no artificial additivesOct 07, 2011
By Lucy Cat "Mandy"
I initially ordered this All-Natural Optimum Nutrition Whey because it was competitively priced compared to the good old artificially sweetened Optimum Nutrition Whey. I was completely expecting a bland and generally lousy tasting protein. In fact, I tend to avoid anything ON-Brand that even hints of vanilla flavor. I think that Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Gold Standard, Vanilla Ice Cream is absolutely terrible and my experience with ON's other all-natural product Oats & Whey Vanilla Bean was miserable. Despite this, the price was attractive enough to convince me and I gave it a whirl....

Shockingly, this protein is NOT terrible! It doesn't have a strong vanilla flavor, but it does have a light, tasty and authentic flavor. Although I mixed 1 scoop with about 6-7oz of cold bottled water, I think it would be vastly better mixed with skim milk, almond milk or coconut milk. It would also work VERY nicely in a banana puree or smoothie drink since it will thicken the drink without spoiling the natural flavor of the fruits.

My only criticism would be the fairly high carb and fat content (5g and 1.5g respectively) which can really add up depending on how many scoops a day you are supplementing with. I would always rather get my carbs from real food instead of my protein supplement.

Though there's no artificial sweetener added, it does have "Fructose" in it (which sounds suspiciously like high-fructose corn syrup to me.... which technically speaking is "natural") So, I'm not completely convinced that I'm much better off with this product compared to their "regular" protein.

Overall, it's not a bad whey matrix, especially if you find it on sale. I wouldn't set out specifically to buy it again, but I wouldn't mind buying it again at the right price.

5Tried all the flavors of GS Natural WheyMay 16, 2009
By David Anderson "Dave!"
Both my wife and I had decided fairly recently to start using protein powder after our workouts. We started with some unnamed protein powder, but my wife started getting migraine headaches. After looking at the ingredients, we decided it was possible that they were due to the artificial sweeteners. I looked around online, and had a heck of a time trying to find a whey protein which did not use artificial sweeteners. Which is where this protein came in.

We have now tried all 3 flavors of Natural, the Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry. My wife's headaches have gone away, which is always a good thing.

My wife and I both disliked the Vanilla. There was something about the flavor we didn't like. There are lots of good descriptive words for sight (bright, dim, yellow, flashing, etc), but nothing much for taste. Too bad. Anyway, we didn't like it.

I am a fan of the Strawberry. I sometimes drink it with water (it's just fine), but with soy milk (I'm a recent soy milk convert) it tastes very close to strawberry milk. I don't mind gulping protein powder just to get it over with, but the strawberry with soy milk was basically at the point that I would enjoy the drink. Excellent!

My wife is a fan of the chocolate. She said it's very similar to normal chocolate powder, which is a good thing, since I've had chocolate protein powders in the past which did not taste like normal chocolate :)

Texture wise, they mix pretty good. We have screw top bottles we use to mix the protein, we pour in the liquid, give it a few seconds of shaking, and then can drink. Usually I wait for the foamy liquid to settle, I don't like drinking foam. On a side note, if the bottle is wet when you put in the protein and the protein settles on the wet bottom, it can clump and need some pretty vigorous shaking. But normally there's no problem.

That's about it, not much else to say about protein powder. I'd strongly suggest the chocolate or strawberry, and stick with the natural stuff rather than the artificial sweeteners.

5Very impressed!Jun 06, 2007
By David Harris "some of this some of that"
After spending hours comparing nutritional information labels on a dozen diffrent brands of powders, I decided on this one for obvious reasons. It replaces alot of ingredients with natural ones, and costs only about 46 cents per serving, yet has an impressive 24 grams of protein per serving. That's really the bottom line why you should choose this product.

I got the chocolate. Threw it in a glass of water, and was VERY surprised that after stirring for about 30 seconds with just a spoon, it had almost completely disolved. You dont even need a shaker for this. As far as the taste well, theres no sweetener, and almost no sugar or fat. So of course it doesnt taste like a freakin milkshake. It's really good for you. Im sure in milk (which adds fat and sugar) it will taste great but i wont be doing that personally.

I wrote this review half a year ago, and the price has gone way up since then. It is still a great product, but not the huge value it was back when i got it $10 cheaper.

5Great Taste, Digestibility, and QualityAug 31, 2008
By Ben Cooke
I have worked in a nutrition store and have tried dozens if not hundreds of different proteins. This one has been the best and doesn't have any of the artificial sweetners and other ingredients which can cause digestion problems. It mixes easily and has a very versatile and enjoyable taste. It is probably best as a postworkout or early morning protein source due to its rapid digestion. I will often take along with some fish oils or flax oil to lower the glycemic index and resulting insulin response. Amazon, especially with free shipping and 15% subscription discount, has by far the best price!
