It's great for treating depressionDec 09, 2011
By Sherry After battling clinical depression for a few years and hating what medications were doing to me, I finally tried it. For nearly a year my friend kept telling me to try it but I resisted because I thought if western meds were making things worse, how could something natural make it better. Let me tell you how wrong I was. By the time I tried sam-e I'd been medication free for 6 months. It only took about 3 days, but I shifted out of my depression and felt so much more hopeful and happy.It was as if 100 pounds had lifted off my chest and I could breathe. I felt depression free for the first in a couple of years. As I continued to take sam-e I did notice it wasn't helping as much as it did that very first time. So what I do now, and what works great for me, is when I feel a depression coming on, a spiraling down kind of feeling, I take a 400mg tablet and just like that, the spiral stops. It stabilizes me. I feel better often within 1 hr. Then I'll continue to take 200 to 400 mg a day for a few days or until I'm fully balanced again, then I stop taking it. For me, rather than use it regularly, i use it only when I need to, almost as an instant remedy that stops my depression in its tracks. I was watching Dr. Oz on 12/6/2011, just the other night, and was so surprised sam-e has gone mainstream as a depression treatment. I know its prescribed by doctors in Europe but to see it on TV here was great. Dr. Oz highlighted it as well as St. johns wart, and saffron tablets as the three top alternative treatments for depression. That it improves joint health is just a plus for me :) My friend who's an acupuncturist recommended the Jarrows brand. She love Jarrows and uses it in her practice. So I get it too.

"Assume nothing"
Ever since a vet recommended this product for a geriatric dog, I've used it for numerous elder dogs since then. It is also wonderful presurgery (check with your surgeon of course) and after any kind of stress or recovery. I was a Foster home for a breed rescue for many years and this is part of my arsenal to help dogs get part transition stress.
To me, seeing the clear results in dogs negates any thought of a placebo effect. Plus, it's backed by enough peer reviewed studies that vets at least prescribe it with confidence.Not this brand,but I have taken care to ensure that the brand I use matches the $80(!) Prescription quality precisely.
Narrow is the one I trust the most, but there are other brands which are also excellent. What you want is:
Made in USA. Even from some of our friends I suspect the potency, and from China you may as well plant them in the ground like magic beans. No offense to individuals from China, but supplements sourced from those manufacturers are consistently lacking in actual active ingredient. :(
Enteric coating. The active ingredient is absorbed in the colon, so must pass the stomach. It will also give you a massive belly ache!
Blister packaging or some other way to seal the tablets individually. The active ingredient is highly volatile. It is sensitive to light, oxygen, heat, and moisture. Also, you want to avoid scratching or chipping the coating.
The directions say take on an empty stomach and wait thirty minutes before food. The minute you wake up is the best time. Nothing should be down there triggering extra digestive action.
All this is totally worth it. I have three dogs, one twelve,one thirteen, one eighteen. The twelve and thirteen year older still play Frisbee, I mean really play, like jumping and stuff. The eighteen years old still requires her daily walks and training time,or she gets into trouble, countersurfing or removing the kitchen trash from the LOCKED cabinet.
The only other thing I do for them in terms of supplements is melatonin at night to ensure correct sleep patterns.

Great for depression, mellowing out anxietyMar 08, 2012
By JustJane I purchased this for a family member, so I can only comment on what I've observed. I think Sam-e works, and much better and quicker than any prescription. Previous prescriptions would leave my family member feeling "spacey", or have real bad side effects. So far with Sam-e, the depression feelings have gone away (I'd say within 2 weeks), this is for a person being diagnosed with medium-depression. I think that alone is remarkable.
The only thing I noticed, which may be in part due to the 400mg dosage, is that Sam-e makes my family member a little too mellow. Maybe the depression has lasted so long, that we never knew this person inside is so mellow, because depression lead to so much anger/anxiety. The mellow-ness, is somewhat close to having an indifference. I'm not too thrilled with this part, as I thought Sam-e worked to even out imbalances in the body. But depression is worse, and incredibly hard to treat, so I'll take mellow over sad/angry.
I'll work to play with the dosing to see the effects. Wish our medical doctors worked more to find solutions such as Sam-e, versus popping rx's.

By Stephen Pohl When there was a problem, and the SAM-e never reached me... the seller immediately re-sent the package. No fuss or bother, and I received what I'd ordered two days later. I was impressed with the way they handled the problem. As to SAM-e itself, I did some internet research, and the stuff seems to have benefits. I've taken a pill every day. And if the effect is only psychological... that's something.

Didn't do jack shmiz for meJan 20, 2012
By Dom Heard a lot of hype about this stuff after getting off Paxil. Took down a box of 200mg Sam-e and had no positive results. Took down a box of 400mg and didn't notice much of any mood elevating effects. If it works for you, more power to you! For me, I did notice that it helped some soreness I was getting in my knees after playing hoops at night. I'm a 32 yr old male in perfect health despite anxiety-related problems if that gives you any reference to help guide your buying decision
