Contains "phthalate" - do not buyAug 18, 2008
By John Weissman When I received this product I immediately returned it because it contains both a phthalate compound, and phthalates, which at least in their use to soften vinyl in toys (including "sex toys") are banned in Europe and other countries. The product also contains polyethelene glycol--plastic. The "function" of these ingredients is to provide the enteric coating, which prevents stomach acid from digesting the enyzmes before they reach the blood via the small intestine. -
Fairly to Source Naturals, who has listed exactly what chemicals are in the product, rather than listing, for example, benign-sounding "microcrystaline cellulose", or "vegetarian capsule"--apparently the FDA allows a variety of creative descriptions)
"Vegetable cellulose" is hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC), and if you see a "P" added to HPMC, as HPMCP, it means the same stuff plus a "phthlalate" compound. "Phthlates" are derived from phthalic acid, which is dervived from napthalene, otherwise known as "mothballs", or "white tar", the chief component of coal tar, a known carcinogen. Altho the capusle you have been popping blythely (all these years) may look and taste incipidly innocent--and vegans think they've been doing "animals" a favor by insisting on "vegicaps"-- the caspules' chemical geneology might be suspect, especially with enteric coating.
For serrapeptase, which some formulators deemed must be enteric-coated--which isnt true--you can take serrapeptase on an empty stomach--my answer is to twist open the enteric-coated capsule and pour the contents into water and gulp it down. As to the "enteric coating" I am forsaking, tho I am losing some amount of potency for sure, I just increase the dose, add another capsule or two, and take a small calcium/magnesium tablet with the capsule-less powders to neutralize stomach acid. Water itself neutralizes acid, so I drink more than I would usually.
I urge the reader to look farther into this issue. Take nothing for granted.

Enteric coating is a mustOct 21, 2010
By P. Robichaux Don't listen to the other reviews. Sure phtalates are bad. They are used to make plastics more bendable and may be hazardous to your health. But in this type of product, enteric coating is required. And the coating used has been shown to be safe for human consumption and allowed to pass through system. It's not the same as they used in pipes or wherever pthalates are used. Sure some enzyme molecules may survive past your stomach and provide benefit without the coating. But most will be destroyed by the acidity of your stomach.
I used this product for Morton's neuroma (classical between 3rd and 4th metatarsal. It went away in two weeks with high dosage of this product (2 pills at night; 1 in morning).
A caution I do warn is that if you experience total body soreness or severe cough, stop using immediately. There have been reported cases of serrapeptase induced pneumonia. It is not the most common side effect but it is a serious one. I experienced cough and total body soreness and stopped using immediately and symptoms went away, but the risk was worth it for my condition.

yes the capsules are questionable, howeverI wanted to make sure the serrapeptase was getting passed my stomach acid. It did and I had great results. I wont repurchase as I am now taking neprinol which the capsule isnt questionable and the contents are a better combination.

HARD TO TELL IF IT'S WORKINGSep 05, 2011
By Clair de Lune

I bought this to soften and remove internal scar tissue that had caused two intestinal blockages. There's no way to know for sure if it's working without actually cutting me open to take a look, but before I began using Serrapeptase, I had two total blockages, five months apart. Since taking the product, I've had no further problems. There have been no side effects at all. I've been trouble-free since March 2009, so it seems to be doing its job.
